Introducing the Author

B

eth Macy was born in Roanoke, Virginia. She spent her childhood growing up in Urbana, Ohio. She considers herself to be a native Midwesterner, though she was born and lived in the South for several years of her life. She grew up with her father and mother who worked as a house painter and a factory worker, respectively.

After finishing her high school studies, Macy went to Bowling Green State University where she studied journalism. In 1982, Macy graduated from Bowling Green with her bachelor's degree. After graduating from Bowling Green, Macy went to Hollins University in Hollins, Virginia. At Hollins, she studied creative writing. In 1993, she earned her master's degree from Hollins.

Macy has a background in investigative journalism. Jokingly, she claims to have started writing at the age of four. At this time, she ran away from her home via tricycle with the family dog. Macy and the dog went to the grocery store together where she struck up a conversation with the butcher. This did not last for long, though, as a neighbor spotted her alone and brought her back to her mother. At the age of ten, Macy began her first job – delivering the local newspaper on her bike.

Macy worked as an investigative journalist for over twenty-five years before becoming an author. She wrote for The Roanoke Times and The New York Times. She has also written for several online journals, magazines, and radio programs. Her topics cover people from all over the world – from Virginia to Haiti to Somalia. Macy has had the opportunity to travel all around the world getting to know people. She has witnessed their happiest times and their lowest times. One of her most notable stories was in Haiti in 2010. It was just after the devastating earthquake hit the country that Macy flew down to the country to help people with their medical needs. When she arrived there, they landed in the midst of the beginning of a cholera epidemic. Even though she says, she did not make much money from investigative journalism, she said there is no other career path she would rather be on. She lives by the mantra, “Follow what moves you.”

To date, Macy has written three books: Factory Man (2015) , which is about a furniture company that sent its production overseas and the man who fought back; Truevine (2016) – the story of two young, black children who were kidnapped by a white man and forced to perform in the circus all over the world; and, Dopesick (2018), which tells of the opioid crisis in the United States. Factory Man is set to be made into a film, which will star actor Tom Hanks. According to Macy, Dopesick is one of the most difficult novels she has written. To write the book, she stayed true to her investigative journalism roots and headed to the center of the opioid crisis – Appalachia.

When she is not writing, Beth Macy frequents her local movie theater and usually goes to a local brewery after.
